Some say the beach ball should be credited for the goal against Liverpool but I say it took some skill for Darren Bent to hit that beach ball and fool Pepe Reina.
You got to wonder though why Pepe Reina didn’t keep his eye on the ball but hey, it’s not easy being a top class goalie these days. Check out the other howlers by some other goalies in these YouTube clips among other weird goals.

How reliant are Liverpool on Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres? Gerrard limped off in Liverpool’s latest game against Lyon in the UEFA Champions League while Torres is nursing a stomach injury.
The statistics are quite interesting.

For the first time in 22 years, Liverpool have lost four games in a row after their they crashed 1-2 at home to Lyons in their UEFA Champions League first round group match. A 90th minute goal by Lyon’s Cesar Delgado deflated the home crowd on a miserable evening.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard had earlier limped off with a groin injury after just 25 minutes, leaving fans in the stadium (and around the world) in shock.

You see, I can’t decide which is a better ‘kicker’ (or more newsworthy).
I’m really enjoying the 09/10 English Premier League season because it excites me to see not only the title race is still wide open in week 7, but for the record, 7 teams appear to be well in contention for the title, or at least, I wouldn’t write any of the top 7 teams off just yet.
The storyteller in me is also secretly taken over by Pompey’s duck. As of last weekend, Portsmouth has just “achieved the record of having made the worst Premier League start since the league’s inception by losing all 7 of their opening matches” (so says Wikipedia).

I’m somewhat bemused by all that title talks at the teething stage of the English Premier League 09/10 season. You know, the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese from the mousetrap.
In my years of watching the English Premier League, storming off to a good start at this stage has little or no correlation with winning the title (or getting close to). So why all the Liverpool-bashing so soon?

The Premier League – Month of August Review
The international break could not have come at a better time. After such a pulsating start to the 2009/10 Premier League season, the two-week break between league games will serve as a breather for both club managers and fans (of course, for most of the players it’s business as usual with the World Cup qualifiers).

Three games in and Liverpool can kiss the championship goodbye. Their Anfield fortress crumbled as they went down 1-3 to Aston Villa
This was their second defeat in three games and the 4-0 victory over Stoke in their second game didn’t kick start their season like they hoped.
To add salt to injury, this was their first defeat since December 2007 when they went down to Manchester United, a sequence lasting 31 games.

So Carlsberg says they want to end their 17-year relationship with Liverpool. No surprise. Liverpool haven’t won a single English championship since 1990.
Carlsberg, probably seduced by the 18 championships Liverpool had won up to then, signed up with Liverpool in 1992 thinking there was going to be another bumper crop of titles.
